Dr. Maria Montessori

The Philosophy

The Montessori method of education was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori who was the first female, Italian physician. Dr. Montessori developed this approach through her scientific observation of children. She observed consistent and naturally developing tendencies and characteristics which led her to prepare environments that would encourage and support the realization of children’s’ full potential.

Dr. Montessori viewed her educational philosophy as an “aid to life” rather than simply educating by imparting knowledge. Her desire was to implement a method that would ignite a flame within the child to become a lifelong learner.

Dr. Montessori dedicated her life to children and developed an extensive wholistic approach to human development that fosters and nurtures fundamental life skills.

Montessori is a broad educational philosophy. An Education for Peace beginning at birth and spans the ages.

“The study of the child… may have an infinitely wider influence, extending to all human questions. In the mind of the child, we may find the key to progress….”

Dr. Maria Montessori | The Secret of Childhood, p. 3

Montessori views education as an ‘aid to life’ that supports the full development of the human being. It is considered the most successful educational system in the world. Montessori fosters the love of learning, independence, and connection with nature. Children learning in a Montessori setting become confident, responsible, independent learners. The method also facilitates positive social development and allows the children to become capable and productive individuals by focusing on their moral, behavioural, emotional and intellectual development.
